Munich (DE), 28th January 2013. Strike five for Chip Ganassi (US): The US motorsport legend won the 24 Hours of Daytona (US) for the fifth time on Sunday with the Chip Ganassi Racing Team. Scott Pruett (US), Juan Pablo Montoya (CO), Memo Rojas (MX) and Charlie Kimball (US) were at the wheel of the number 01 BMW Riley that provided the second overall victory for the Chip Ganassi / BMW partnership, having previously triumphed in 2011.

“Congratulations to Chip Ganassi’s team, which has added a further chapter to its impressive motorsport success story with another victory in Daytona,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “I would also like to congratulate all the BMW engineers, who have contributed significantly to ensuring that BMW Power led the way in this unbelievably tough and exhausting race. Three Daytona prototypes with BMW engines in the first three places on the grid, the fastest lap, and another victory speak for themselves.”

The two Ganassi cars started the race from the front row following outstanding performances in qualifying, and dictated proceedings at the “Daytona International Speedway” for long periods of the race. The victorious number 01 BMW Riley led for more than 400 of the 709 laps it ultimately completed. The number 02 car also led, before having to retire prior the end of the race.

Pruett had a special reason to celebrate, having claimed his fifth victory in Daytona to equal the record previously held by Hurley Haywood (US). “That was an unbelievable day,” said Pruett after his record-equalling drive. “In Juan Pablo Montoya, Memo Rojas and Charlie Kimball, we simply had a team full of unbelievable drivers who were able to climb into the car and bring home the win.”

Montoya, who won four Formula One Grands Prix during his time with the BMW Williams F1 Team, made his third appearance on the top step of the podium in Daytona, and said: “That is the fourth time I have lined up in car number 01 in Daytona. I have won three times, and finished runner-up once. I can’t complain.”
